Your no-gi classes are growing, and students keep asking the same question: where can they get a rash guard that shows their belt and carries the academy logo? Some buy generic ranked tops online, some turn up in whatever they own, and a few find out at check-in on competition day that their top doesn't meet the rules. A custom ranked rash guard range solves all three problems at once.
This guide covers what academy owners and coaches need to decide before ordering: how ranked rash guards work, what competition rules to plan around, fabric and sleeve choices, sizing, and how to keep a range going as students get promoted.
What is a ranked rash guard and why do academies use them?
A ranked rash guard is a tight no-gi training top that shows the wearer's belt colour. The colour usually appears as panels on the sides or shoulders, stripes on the sleeves, or as the main body colour. In a gi class the belt shows rank at a glance. In no-gi there is no belt, so the top does that job.
For an academy, a branded ranked range does more than show rank:
- It gives no-gi classes the same team look that matching gis give gi classes.
- Students have a top that is ready for competitions that use ranked rules.
- Every promotion becomes a reason to buy a new top, which helps pro shop sales.
- Your logo shows up in every training photo and competition video your students post.
What do competition rules say about ranked rash guards?
If your students compete in IBJJF no-gi events, the rash guard has to meet the uniform rules, and the design needs to be checked before you order, not after. The rule book has asked for:
- A tight, elastic top that is long enough to cover the torso down to the waistband of the shorts.
- A base colour of black, white, or black and white.
- A set minimum share of the athlete's belt colour in the design, or a top made fully in the belt colour.
Rules change from time to time, and other organisations set their own uniform rules, so check the current rule book for the events your students enter and send it with your artwork. Our guide to BJJ gi patch placement and competition rules covers the gi side of the same planning.
Does every student need a ranked top?
No. Many academies sell one standard academy rash guard for everyday training and a ranked version for competitors and for students who want to show their belt. Offering both keeps the range simple while still covering competition needs.
Which fabric and sleeve length should we choose?
Grappling puts a lot of stretch and friction on a top, so the fabric matters as much as the design. Look for a four-way stretch polyester and spandex blend that moves with the body, holds its shape and dries quickly between classes. Flatlock seams lie flat against the skin and reduce rubbing during long rounds.
- Long sleeve tops cover more skin, which helps against mat burn and skin-to-skin contact.
- Short sleeve tops feel cooler in hot gyms and summer months.
- Many academies offer both in the same design, so the team look stays the same whatever students choose.
Sublimation suits ranked rash guards well because the ink goes into the fabric instead of sitting on top of it. The design doesn't crack or peel when the top stretches, and there is no extra layer to make the fabric stiff. If you are new to the process, our plain guide to sublimation printing explains how it works.
How should we design a ranked range for the whole academy?
The easiest way to design a ranked range is to create one master design and change only the rank colour. Your logo, layout and academy colours stay the same across every belt, so the range looks like one family on the mats.

When you brief the design, think about:
- Where the rank colour goes: side panels, shoulders, sleeve stripes or the full body.
- Kids belt colours such as grey, yellow, orange and green if you run junior no-gi classes.
- Logo size and placement on the chest, back and sleeves.
- Whether competitors' tops need a plainer version that follows the rules more closely than your training design.
How do we plan sizes and quantities?
Rash guards are meant to fit tightly, so sizing mistakes show quickly. Ask students to measure chest and height rather than guessing from T-shirt sizes, and offer men's, women's and kids' cuts if your classes have all three. A short pre-order window before you place the order gives you real numbers for each size and colour.
- 1.Send a size chart and collect chest and height measurements from interested students.
- 2.Count orders per belt colour, cut and sleeve length.
- 3.Add a few extra pieces in the most common sizes for new students and promotions.
- 4.Keep the approved design on file so later orders match the first batch.
Our guide to BJJ gi sizes for academy orders uses the same pre-order approach for gis, so you can run both orders together.
What should we ask a rash guard manufacturer before ordering?
- Is there a minimum order per colour, size or design?
- Will I see a customised prototype with my logo before bulk production?
- What fabric blend and seam type do you use for grappling tops?
- Can you print our academy name inside the collar and add our own swing tags?
- How long does bulk production take, and how will the order ship?
How UZAS Sports makes ranked rash guards for academies
UZAS Sports has made martial arts gear in our own factory in Sialkot, Pakistan since 2005, with a showroom in Sialkot and a booking office in Melbourne. Common questions
What is a ranked rash guard?
A ranked rash guard is a no-gi training top that shows the wearer's belt colour, usually through coloured panels, stripes or a full body colour. Academies use them so students can show their rank in no-gi classes, and many students need one to compete under IBJJF no-gi rules.
What do IBJJF rules say about no-gi rash guards?
The IBJJF rule book has asked for a tight, elastic top long enough to reach the waistband of the shorts, with a base of black, white or black and white and a set share of the athlete's belt colour, or a top fully in the belt colour. Rules are updated, so always check the current rule book before you approve a design.
Should academy rash guards be long or short sleeve?
Both work. Long sleeves give more protection against mat burn and skin contact, while short sleeves feel cooler in warm gyms. Many academies offer both in the same design and let students choose.
Can I order a few ranked rash guards in each belt colour?
Yes. UZAS Sports has no minimum order, so you can order a small number in each rank colour and size, then reorder as students are promoted. Shipping is free from 25 pieces.
Will a sublimated rash guard print crack after washing?
Sublimation prints the design into the fabric rather than on top of it, so it doesn't crack or peel the way a heavy surface print can. Washing in cool water and air drying helps the fabric keep its stretch.
Can I see a sample of my design before ordering?
UZAS Sports makes a complimentary prototype customised with your academy logo, so you can check the fit, colours and print before you approve bulk production.
